What a Week! The Crafting Life is in Full Swing
Whew—this past week has been a lot! As a new business owner, I’m learning just how much goes into getting things up and running, especially in the crafting world. I’ve been working hard to find my niche, and to be honest, when I first started crafting, I wasn’t even thinking about building a business. I just loved how it made me feel—creating beautiful things for myself and my family brought me so much joy.
Now, I’m a very goal-oriented person. Once I set my sights on something, I move quickly. I don’t spend too much time second-guessing—I weigh my options, make a decision, and then get to work. So, true to form, I made my to-do list for launching my business:
✅ Get my EIN from the IRS
✅ File my BOIR
✅ Submit my Articles of Incorporation
✅ Open a business bank account
✅ Lock in my website domain
✅ Build my own website (yes, I did that!)
✅ And finally… start selling my work!
I officially launched Walnut Farm Crafts on February 5, and let me tell you—it’s been a journey already! I kicked things off with a couple of large mug orders for a local church, and I was so excited. The order was for a ministry that supports people battling cancer, and being part of something so meaningful reminded me why I love doing this. That moment inspired me to start designing mugs with inspirational and spiritual messages—words that lift you up and feed the soul.
Now, I’m not new to crafting. I’ve been making wreaths, swags, and door décor for over 10 years. But using tools like the Cricut, heat press, mug press, and convection oven? That was new. And since I’m the type who likes to master her craft, I dove right in. I’ve spent hours watching YouTube tutorials, scrolling through Facebook craft groups, flipping through books, and—of course—practicing. Let’s just say, my mom has a few of my “learning curve” tote bags at her house right now 😄.
Once I felt confident with my totes, I decided to try my hand at glass cutting boards—and wow, what a fun project! They’re easy to make and absolutely gorgeous. The smaller ones (8×11 inches) sparkle beautifully when the light hits them, and I couldn’t stop taking pictures and videos. I added all five of my first designs to my Etsy shop this weekend, right after I listed my matching “Welcome Spring” tote and 20 oz. skinny tumbler.
Speaking of which—yes, I opened my Etsy shop last week! 🎉 You can check it out at: https://walnutfarmcrafts.etsy.com
When my husband took the cutting boards to church on Sunday, a few folks asked about larger sizes. Right now, the largest sublimation-ready cutting boards are 11×15 inches, so I ordered a batch to test out some new designs—just in time for Mother’s Day! I’ll be posting them on both my website and Etsy shop very soon.
